Autumnal Coats.

autumn dogsIt’s that strange time of year when we start to cover up again and get cosy. We brighten up darker Autumnal days with a light coat and coordinate it with warm layers until the season truly settles.

Dogs however don’t have the luxury of wearing a light weight coat or a shower proof stylish mac. So do we have a rethink when asking our groomer what to do? The red leaves are starting to fall  and out cooler dog walking routes are now strewn with soil leaves and inviting puddles. No problem for my double coated German Shepherd Moses, who needs regular de-shedding. He’s tall enough not to drag much in on his coat, although his pads need regular checking and clipping out. My Maltese cross and Cavalier King Charles are much closer to the ground and are both predominanlty white ( or grey) depending on the weather. The Maltese cross has little warmth in his cotton wool like coat and once its wet he shivers like a dervish. Its the equivelent of going walking in the rain in your socks and then putting your shoes on to go to work. We wouldnt do it, beacuse A) who doesn’t wear socks in Autumn? and B) We’d be damp and cold all day and C) the boss would think we had truly lost our minds.

Regular bath and brush appointments between grooms will help keep their coats tangle free, alongside a regular home grooming routine. Poodle crosses are high energy great dogs to walk in the woods or by the beach this time of year, but their coats can matt and felt quickly. Some people opt to use a onesie to keep their dogs from moisture tangling. Other owners prefer to up their grooming routine at home and use professional detangling products between baths. Some of you lovely pet parents use a protective coat to keep the bulk of the fur from picking up mud and dirt. Others go for a shorter style that is easy to manage. Its important to match your dogs style with a realisitic expectation of their lifestyle.

At Hair of the Dog Cherry Lane Garden Centre Braintree, we can advise on coat conditon, lifestyle, training and even fit your dog with a stylish Autumn coat, harness collar and lead. We love the earthy tones in some of the Red+Ginger collection and the bright tweeds that defy the Autumn darkness. Be sure to book in advance and request a styling session. 07539605752.
